John Henrik Clarke (1915–1998) was an African American historian, writer, editor, lecturer, and teacher who moved to Harlem in 1933 and developed his career through writing workshops, study circles, and independent scholarship. He published poetry, short stories, essays, and influential works on African and African American history, and edited anthologies including Malcolm X: Man and His Times. Clarke became a pioneer of Pan-African and Africana studies, writing and teaching for more than six decades.
