Alex Haley (1921–1992) was an American journalist, biographer, and novelist who began developing his writing skills during a 20-year U.S. Coast Guard career. After retiring in 1959, he became known for his interviews with prominent African Americans for Playboy, co-authored The Autobiography of Malcolm X (1965), and wrote Roots: The Saga of an American Family (1976), a landmark work tracing his family’s history and African American heritage.
