John Banville is an Irish novelist, short-story writer, and former literary editor of The Irish Times, where he worked from 1988 to 1999. Born in Wexford in 1945, he became internationally known for highly stylized, psychologically complex literary novels including The Book of Evidence, Ghosts, and The Sea, which won the 2005 Booker Prize. He also writes crime fiction, often featuring detective Quirke, under the pen name Benjamin Black.
