Mario Puzo (1920–1999) was an American novelist, screenwriter, and journalist best known for his Mafia crime novels. He published his first novel, The Dark Arena, in 1955, but achieved international fame with The Godfather (1969). Puzo co-wrote the screenplays for the first two Godfather films, winning Academy Awards for both, and continued writing novels including The Sicilian, The Last Don, Omerta, and The Family.
