Jilly Cooper (1937–2025) was an English author whose writing career began in journalism in 1956, followed by more than 13 years as a Sunday Times columnist. She first published nonfiction, including How to Stay Married and Class, before writing permissive romances and then achieving major bestseller success with Riders (1985), the first of her racy, humorous Rutshire Chronicles novels. Her work is known for combining romance, sex, comedy, social observation, and satire, and she also wrote children’s books and other nonfiction.
