Joseph Roth (1894–1939) was an Austrian-Jewish novelist, journalist, and essayist who wrote in German. After serving in World War I, he became a prominent newspaper correspondent while publishing novels and short stories shaped by the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, exile, Jewish identity, and postwar dislocation. His best-known works include Job (1930) and The Radetzky March (1932), and he continued writing in exile until his death in Paris.
