Jim Murphy (1947–2022) was an award-winning American author of more than 35 books for children and young adults, most notably carefully researched narrative nonfiction about American history, science, and public health. After working in juvenile publishing and rising to managing editor, he became a full-time writer in 1977 and published his first book, Weird and Wacky Inventions, in 1978. His acclaimed works included The Great Fire, An American Plague, The Boys' War, and The Long Road to Gettysburg, earning him two Newbery Honors, the Sibert Medal, and the Margaret A. Edwards Award.
