Thomas Carlyle (1795–1881) was a Scottish essayist, historian, philosopher, and translator who first gained prominence through writing on German literature and philosophy. His semi-autobiographical philosophical novel Sartor Resartus established his distinctive prose style, while later works—including The French Revolution, biographies of Oliver Cromwell and Frederick the Great, political pamphlets, essays, and lectures—made him a major, though controversial, Victorian literary figure.
