Seichō Matsumoto (1909–1992) was a self-educated Japanese novelist and journalist who began publishing fiction in his forties. He became one of Japan’s most influential postwar writers through socially oriented mystery, detective, and suspense novels, often examining corruption, psychology, and everyday life. His prolific career produced more than 450 works, and he also wrote historical fiction and nonfiction; he won the Akutagawa Prize in 1952 and the Mystery Writers of Japan Award in 1957.
