James Herriot was the pen name of British veterinarian James Alfred Wight (1916–1995). He began writing at age 50, drawing on his experiences as a country vet in Yorkshire for his bestselling autobiographical books, beginning with If Only They Could Talk (1970). His warm, humorous stories about animals, rural life, and their owners became the basis for the All Creatures Great and Small adaptations and made him one of the best-known animal writers of the 20th century.
