Edward George Earle Lytton Bulwer-Lytton (1803–1873) was a prolific English novelist, playwright, poet, and essayist whose literary career began with the fashionable novel Pelham (1828). He became widely known for popular historical novels such as The Last Days of Pompeii and Rienzi, crime fiction including Paul Clifford and Eugene Aram, and later works blending occultism, supernatural horror, and speculative ideas, including Zanoni, A Strange Story, The Haunted and the Haunters, and Vril: The Power of the Coming Race.
