Louis Hughes (1832–1913) was an African American author who was born enslaved in Virginia and secretly learned to read and write. After gaining freedom at the end of the Civil War, he settled in Milwaukee, where he became a nurse and shared his experiences of slavery and escape. He published his autobiographical slave narrative, Thirty Years a Slave: From Bondage to Freedom, in 1897.
