In 1996, Kevin Antoine made history in Mississippi politics as the first African American to be nominated for Congress in the state's majority-white 4th District, offering a new choice for black Democrats who had long supported white candidates. Despite strong support for his opponent from the Mississippi and National Democratic Parties, Antoine, a political newcomer, successfully defeated a veteran white city councilwoman from Jackson. This pivotal candidacy marked a significant moment of change within Mississippi's political landscape.
