Set in 1950s Romania, Painter of Silence follows a deaf and mute man found on hospital steps, whose memories gradually come to light through his drawings, revealing a deep connection to a young nurse named Safta. As their bond grows amidst a backdrop of war and political upheaval, the story explores themes of memory, communication, and resilience. The novel was shortlisted for the 2012 Orange Prize for Fiction.
