In the fall of 2015, the author responded to an advertisement seeking volunteers for the Olympia Harbor Patrol, a program offering training in boat handling, search and rescue, and port security in exchange for a year of service. With a background as a recreational boater and sailor, the author was motivated by a desire to give back to the community. After applying online, they were soon invited for an interview to join the program.
