Birthright Citizens explores how African-American activists fought to redefine citizenship and challenge exclusionary laws before and after the Civil War. Through legal battles, grassroots efforts, and strategic advocacy, they worked to secure their rights and establish their status as citizens by birth. Martha S. Jones incorporates new archival research to show how their efforts culminated in the constitutionalization of the birthright principle with the Fourteenth Amendment.
