Ysenda Maxtone Graham's humorous and insightful history explores life in British girls' boarding schools between 1939 and 1979, revealing the casual attitudes and social attitudes that shaped education for young women during that era. The book highlights the often eccentric and superficial reasons behind school choices, as well as the harsh conditions and limited academic opportunities many girls faced. Through interviews with former pupils now in their later years, the narrative offers a candid reflection on a bygone educational world filled with both hardship and unexpected pleasures.
