However Long the Day tells the story of two strangers—Niall Donovan, an Irish immigrant, and Frederick Philips, a wealthy New Yorker—who discover they resemble each other so closely they could be twins. When Frederick persuades Niall to switch places for a night to avoid his father’s disapproval, they become entangled in a series of events shaped by World War I, the Spanish Flu, and the social changes of Prohibition-era Manhattan. Both men are swept up in a turbulent 24 hours that challenge their perceptions and circumstances.
