The Summer Before the War

Set in East Sussex in 1914, this story follows Hugh Grange's visit to his aunt Agatha in the picturesque town of Rye, where life is about to change dramatically as war approaches. The arrival of Beatrice Nash, a dynamic new Latin teacher, introduces fresh perspectives and sparks with the town’s traditional ways, amid the backdrop of political tensions and personal ambitions. As the summer ends, the community’s customs and beliefs will be tested in the face of impending conflict.
