Fourteen-year-old Benny Neusner longs for his neglectful mother’s approval and secretly dreams of having a dog, despite his father's objections. When he meets Bess Rutledge, a 70-year-old former dog breeder who once aspired to compete at the Westminster Dog Show, their budding friendship leads them to confront their pasts and the challenges of the dog show world. Together, they attempt to build up Breaker, Bess’s mischievous Standard Poodle, in hopes of finally achieving their dreams.
