In 1790, Moses Seixas of the Touro Synagogue wrote to President Washington seeking assurance of religious freedom for Jews in the new nation. Washington responded, affirming that the U.S. government offers no backing for bigotry or persecution, emphasizing the importance of good citizenship. This exchange highlights two foundational principles of America: religious freedom and separation of church and state.
