Jane Holloway, a linguist with the Providence expedition, takes control of an alien ship to return its navigator home and uncover the truth behind his crew's annihilation. Upon arrival, she finds the navigator’s world ravaged by a mysterious plague, with surviving members of his race scattered across the galaxy.
