When technology allows for shifting to alternate probability patterns, Earth addresses its overpopulation by sending families to newly created, uninhabited planets where life never began. Each family is assigned its own unique planet from an infinite array of alt-Earths, with computers ensuring no repeats. However, complications arise when others also discover and utilize this method.
