Melting Point

Longlisted for the 2024 Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction, "Melting Point" is a compelling family memoir that explores a forgotten chapter in Jewish history: the Galveston Movement. Narrated by Henry Goodman, the audiobook recounts how David Jochelmann, Rachel Cockerell's great-grandfather, led a group of Russian Jews to Texas in 1907, seeking refuge from rising antisemitism in Eastern Europe. Through an innovative blend of letters, diaries, and interviews, Cockerell captures the intertwining lives of her family with notable figures like Israel Zangwill, while posing profound questions about identity, belonging, and the challenges of holding onto one's heritage in a new environment.
