Off-White

Set in 1966 Suriname, "Off-White" explores the life of Grandma Bee, the resilient matriarch of a diverse family grappling with the legacies of colonialism as she faces her own mortality. As she reflects on her lineage and the scattered lives of her descendants, particularly her granddaughter Heli, the story delves into themes of family, identity, and the complexities of heritage. This poignant narrative, translated by Lucy Scott and David McKay, marks the return of Astrid Roemer, the only Surinamese author to win the Dutch Literature Award, crafting a profound meditation on the bonds that tie us together in an ever-changing world.
