Rachel expects to feel like royalty as she rides an elaborately adorned elephant through Rangoon, but her observations about the animal's injuries change her perspective. When she wins a special crown at her synagogue celebration, she is inspired to find a way to help the elephant. The story is inspired by the author's mother's memories of the Burmese Jewish community.
