The Orphan Train Movement

In the mid-19th century, as New York City’s population surged due to a wave of immigration, the conditions for many residents, particularly children, became dire. Amidst overcrowded tenements and deteriorating living conditions, the Orphan Trains emerged as a response, providing a lifeline for vulnerable children. Though not the ideal solution, these trains offered hope and a chance for survival, leading to over two million descendants from those relocated, ultimately shaping future generations.
