Fabric of America

Using a compelling mix of narrative and rhetorical style, Andro Linklater explores the work of U.S. surveyor Andrew Ellicott, who in 1784 used advanced tools to calculate the Pennsylvania-Virginia border. The story traces how pioneers' westward expansion and the work of surveyors like Ellicott contributed to the development of property boundaries and the formation of stable government.
