At the start of World War I, eleven-year-old Elsie Clarke is sent to a mysterious school in the woods for the most talented children, known as the Gifted. As she discovers her own special talents rooted in her traits, desires, and fears, Elsie faces a challenge when the headmistress's plans threaten the innocence of the students. The Gifted must unite to challenge her rule and uncover the true purpose of Elsewhere, a magical forest with its own secrets.
