Race and the War on Poverty: From Watts to East L.A.

"Race and the War on Poverty" explores how community organizations in Los Angeles, formed in response to President Lyndon B. Johnson's War on Poverty, navigated racial conflicts and fostered cooperation among African American and Mexican American groups. Through the lens of pivotal events like the Watts riots and the rise of local activism, the book examines how these community-led initiatives applied political skill and democratic ideals to create lasting social and cultural impacts. Despite political setbacks, these organizations continue to adapt and influence the ongoing fight against poverty in Los Angeles.
