The Norman Conquest in English History, Volume I

"Norman Conquest in English History, Volume 1: A Broken Chain?" explores the lasting influence of the Norman Conquest on English historiography, law, and political thought over more than seven centuries. George Garnett traces how the event shaped efforts to record, interpret, and even reconstruct England’s legal and historical identity from the Middle Ages through the early modern period. The book also examines the preservation and contestation of Conquest-related materials, setting the stage for a deeper analysis of its ongoing significance in the 17th century in a subsequent volume.
