In Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's 1894 novelette, "The Parasite," young physiologist Austin Gilroy becomes entwined with Miss Penclosa, a middle-aged woman possessing psychic abilities and a disability. Skeptical yet curious, Gilroy witnesses her powers firsthand when his fiancée, Agatha, is put into a trance to demonstrate their efficacy. As he delves deeper into the occult under the guidance of his professor, he seeks to explore the physical aspects of Miss Penclosa's captivating abilities, leading him into a world of mind control reminiscent of Victorian mesmerism.
