In 1866, Greymouth, New Zealand, becomes a chaotic gold mining hub fraught with danger as Inspector William Henry James grapples with the notorious Burgess gang that has left a trail of violence and a missing young surveyor. Through the chaos of floods and rampaging miners, James’s mission to ensure safety is complicated by the gang’s criminal exploits. Fast forward to 1888, as James approaches retirement, he reflects on the haunted memories of that tumultuous year and his relentless pursuit of the last surviving member of the gang responsible for a series of murders, including that of George Dobson.
