In this satire by Edith Wharton, the members of an exclusive Lunch Club eagerly await the visit of renowned novelist Osric Dane, only to find their attempts to impress her falter as she appears bored and disdainful. The story humorously highlights the clash between superficial social pretensions and genuine intellectual engagement, culminating in a moment of awkward silence. With keen wit, Wharton explores themes of social class, superficiality, and the disconnect between appearances and substance.
