Charity and Sylvia

"Charity and Sylvia" explores the remarkable 44-year bond between Charity Bryant and Sylvia Drake, two women in early 19th-century America who formed a relationship recognized by their community as akin to marriage. Through detailed personal documents, the book offers a nuanced view of their lives, challenging modern assumptions about the origins of same-sex marriage and illuminating a more diverse and accepting early American society.
