The Flying Grunt

Richard Edward Carey’s extensive 38-year military career spanned pivotal moments in U.S. history, from fighting at Inchon and Chosin in Korea to flying combat sorties in Vietnam, earning numerous awards for bravery. Despite a childhood injury that prevented him from joining the Mercury-7 space program, he participated in critical military operations, including a historic helicopter evacuation from Saigon. After retiring from the military, Carey dedicated himself to public service, supporting veterans and their families through roles in government and community initiatives.
