Progressive Dystopia

In Progressive Dystopia, Savannah Shange examines the challenges faced by the Robeson Justice Academy in San Francisco, a school designed to provide social justice education to youth of color amidst the city's severe racialized displacement. Despite its progressive curriculum, the school struggles with high suspension rates for Black students, highlighting a disconnection between its mission and practice. Drawing on her extensive fieldwork and teaching experience, Shange critiques the school's role within a broader context of antiblackness and advocates for abolition as a necessary approach to achieving Black freedom.
