From Mammies to Militants

In her insightful exploration of Black domestic workers in literature, Trudier Harris examines how influential writers, from Charles Chesnutt to Toni Morrison, have leveraged the stereotype of the maid to comment on Black-white relations and highlight the struggles of Black protagonists. Through a blend of folkloristic, sociological, historical, and psychological analyses, along with personal interviews, she differentiates between Northern and Southern maids and the varying representations of "mammy" versus "militant" figures. In her new afterword, "From Militants to Movie Stars," Harris investigates the evolution of these representations in literature since 1982, revealing a transformative landscape that breaks with traditional portrayals.
