In 1904 Czarist Russia, a young boy named Max witnesses the horrific murder of his mother, leading him and his father to flee to New York. There, Max falls in love with a Polish girl named Sophie, but their dreams are shattered when she is compelled to marry a crime boss. As Max embarks on a ruthless ascent through the New York underworld, Sophie evolves from a submissive girl into a determined woman who fights for her own destiny.
