Wovoka

Wovoka, a member of the Southern Paiute and known also as Jack Wilson, was a prophet who experienced visions in 1889 that led to the creation of the Ghost Dance religion, which gained widespread popularity across the American West. His background as a traditional medicine man and exposure to Christian teachings through the Wilson family influenced his spiritual insights during a period marked by conflict, displacement, and resettlement for many Paiute peoples. The history of the Paiutes includes their struggle against settlement, warfare, and forced relocation in the harsh Great Basin environment. Wovoka’s spiritual movement offered hope and a sense of cultural renewal amid these challenges.
