Bartleby

"Bartleby, the Scrivener: A Story of Wall Street" is a classic short story by Herman Melville that explores the interactions between a lawyer and his unusual new clerk, Bartleby, who repeatedly responds with "I would prefer not to." Set in 19th-century Wall Street, the narrative examines themes of individualism and societal expectations through a subtle, light-hearted tone despite its tragic ending. Recognized as an early work of modernism, the story offers a compelling look at human nature and the mysteries of the human condition.
