Alice Einstein, once a celebrated literary novelist, now finds herself living in her sister Liesl's spare room, struggling with writer's block. When Liesl's ex-husband Sam reappears after ten years, claiming he's ill, Alice's keen storytelling instincts suggest there's more to his story, leading her to enlist a tough private investigator.
