In this thought-provoking tale, poverty-stricken Toby "Trotty" Veck grapples with the harsh realities of a world filled with cruelty and corruption. Through a series of encounters with various figures, including a mother in despair and corrupt politicians, Trotty's perception of humanity darkens. However, his life takes an unexpected turn when he helps a man and a little girl, leading to a fantastical journey with goblins who reveal the complexities of human nature and the circumstances that shape it. Ultimately, Trotty learns that while evil may manifest in individuals, it is not an inherent trait they are born with.
