Sheriff Ike Schwartz of Picketsville, a small town near Washington, D.C., juggles his roles as a former CIA agent, town lawman, and university president's romantic interest, often finding himself drawn into intriguing conflicts. When a body is discovered at the local urgent-care clinic and a break-in occurs at a university faculty member’s home, questions arise about the significance of a particular icon—the Virgin of Tenderness—and its possible connection to the crimes. As Ike investigates, he must determine whether the clues are rooted in old spycraft or something more current.
