Cecil Reitmeister, the son of a germophobic mother, develops an ambitious plan to usher humanity into a new era of interspecies harmony through microbiome manipulation, but his intense experimentation leads to social isolation and a series of personal setbacks. After a confrontation with authorities resulting in his arrest, Cecil grapples with homelessness and begins to reevaluate his rigid worldview. His encounters with a community of Freegans challenge his perspectives and force him to confront his past, ultimately prompting him to reconsider his mission to save humanity.
