Hester Christie returns to England after 18 months in Kenya, settling in the village of Old Quinings to spend a summer with her nearly grown children. Despite her hopes for a peaceful time, she's quickly drawn into a swirl of activities involving nosy neighbors, a duplicitous landlady, and an unexpected visitor. Along the way, Hester also finds herself entangled in some matchmaking efforts, all while navigating the complexity of her new surroundings.
