Death by Water

In this short story from the British Library Crime Classic Deep Waters, former inspector Sir John Appleby worries about his friend Charles Vandervell, an elderly philosopher living alone on the Cornish coast. When Appleby visits, he discovers Vandervell entertaining his female neighbor, but soon afterward, Vandervell goes missing, leaving behind what appears to be a suicide note.
