An Old Man's Love

In "An Old Man's Love," aging bachelor William Whittlestaff becomes the guardian of Mary Lawrie, the orphaned daughter of a deceased friend. As Whittlestaff develops feelings for Mary, she finds herself torn between him and her true love, John Gordon, who has returned after three years of seeking his fortune in South Africa. This poignant tale explores themes of love, promise, and the complexities of relationships, set against the backdrop of Victorian society. Anthony Trollope's final completed work, published posthumously in 1884, delves into the interplay of ambition and affection.
