Staying On is the sequel to The Raj Quartet, following Colonel Tusker and Lucy Smalley as they remain in the hills of Pankot after Indian independence alters their social status. The novel explores their evolving relationship and the broader class tensions among the British in India, blending humor with poignant insights into loneliness and stubborn affection. Awarded the Booker Prize, it was also adapted into a film in 1979 starring Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson.
