In 1842, renowned author Charles Dickens embarked on a visit to America, where he faced a lukewarm reception due to his criticisms of American book piracy and slavery practices. Despite his intent to express a supportive view of the nation, his writings in American Notes received harsh criticism from some American reviewers, who described them as lacking substance.
